Electronic auction - Red Cross targets Web

The American Red Cross expects to raise at least $250,000 when it teams up with MSN.com on March 24 to host what it says will be the world’s largest online charity auction.

Proceeds from the 10-day “virtual auction” will benefit national headquarters, as well as 30 local Red Cross chapters that provide humanitarian services and disaster relief.

Dr. Bernadine Healy, CEO of the Red Cross, says effective use of the Internet is vital to the organization’s future to build both service delivery and community support.

Auction participants will bid on items ranging from getaways to high-tech gadgetry, sports memorabilia and fine art. Item donors receive online recognition and hyperlinks to their Web sites.

Operating on a $2.3 billion budget, the Red Cross mobilizes relief to victims of more than 60,000 disasters nationwide and is a primary supplier of blood and blood products in the United States.

The Red Cross also assists disaster victims in more than 20 countries throughout the world.

Interested participants can sign up to be notified when the auction goes live.
