Winston-Salem food bank names chief

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Clyde W. Fitzgerald Jr., a board member of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina and a former senior executive of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., has been named executive director of the Winston-Salem-based agency.

He succeeds Nan H. Griswold, who announced in September she would be leaving the food bank after serving as executive director throughout its 26-year history.

"Our mission remains unchanged," Fitzgerald says in a statement. "We will continue to rely on our strong base of supporters to provide access to food for those who cannot afford it."

The agency also plans to grow its support base to meet needs exacerbated by the economic slump, Fitzgerald says.

Fitzgerald has been involved in the food bank since its inception in 1982, serving three terms as board chair and heading two capital campaigns.

He also helped launch the agency's annual golf tournament, which has raised over $1.9 million to date for food-bank programs.

The board of the food bank named a major-gifts program in Fitzgerald's honor on the agency's 25^th anniversary.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina is a member of Feeding America, the largest charitable hunger-relief organization in the U.S. Since it began operations, the local food bank has distributed more than 100 million pounds of food and groceries to needy people in 18 North Carolina counties.
