Lodestar prize promotes collaboration

In an effort to encourage nonprofits to opt for cooperation over competition, the Lodestar Foundation is introducing the $250,000 Collaboration Prize.

The award will honor nonprofit partnerships that have achieved a significant impact while reducing duplication of efforts within the sector.

"We hope to uncover the most successful techniques and business models that will heighten the productivity and effectiveness of the nonprofit world," says Jerry Hirsch, chairman of the Lodestar Foundation.

To be eligible for the prize, collaborations must involve two or more nonprofits that otherwise would be in competition with one another for staff, clients or financial resources.

The winner will be chosen by a selection panel made up of nonprofit and business leaders, and chaired by Sterling Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Collaborations can be nominated by board members or others who have familiarity with the organizations but are not employed by them.

Additional guidelines and applications, which may be submitted June 1 through July 21, are available online.

The winner will be announced in March 2009 at the Spring Forum on Nonprofit Effectiveness, hosted by the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University.
