Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, a tireless advocate for philanthropy and the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, died Aug. 20 at age 58 after a brain hemorrhage, The Washington Post reported Aug. 21.
Tubbs Jones, who co-founded the bipartisan Congressional Philanthropy Caucus last year, was serving as its first co-chair at the time of her death.
"The saying, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected,' was instilled in me at a young age," Tubbs Jones said when announcing the establishment of the caucus. "This philosophy has and continues to be a centerpiece of American culture."
First elected in 1998, Tubbs Jones was serving her fifth term in Congress.
A vocal critic of the Iraq war, she chaired the House ethics committee and would have been a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.
