Cathy received her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Iowa. She has worked for the Rochester Public Schools in Rochester, Minn., as an executive assistant, and as a freelance editor/layout designer.

Cathy's volunteer work has included serving as a board member and chair of the communications committee for the Rochester Public School Foundation, newsletter editor for Habitat for Humanity, grant writer for Rochester Neighborhood Resource Center, and volunteer for Iowa Women Initiating Social Change and for the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh, N.C.
